I'm Hooked

This is the finished piece. I used a fifth fabric in the hat and scarf because I needed something with three values very close together. I am very happy with the results.

Since I have done portraits before I took a little artistic license and added a bit of hair here and a bit there. I felt doing this gave a bit more definition to the hair. I also added the little strip of dark to the left side of her lower lip giving the lip more definition.

  1. Wow -- you did a terrific job! I bet Aubrey and her parents will love it. Reading your blog, I think you hit on a key factor in a successful portrait: you really do need a photo with lots of contrast. It makes a huge difference when there are very light and very dark values on the facial skin. It adds so much more depth to the finished portrait. You've definitely mastered the technique. I can't wait to see what you make next. I hope you keep me posted because I love to see portraits. Making these quick little portraits is addictive, isn't it?

  2. Marilyn, this is just beautiful! What a great interpretation of the photograph, and what a big improvement from your first effort. Now I'm inspired to try my own hand at Maria's techniques.

  5. I love it! Maria's DVD must have excellent instructions and you were a good student. I like the way you used that print for the scarf and hat, too. It is perfect!
