Hi Marilyn - This quilt is going to be a beauty! I think you have had some excellent suggestions about tweaking the roots. One thing I often find helpful is going to flickr.com and entering something like "tree with exposed roots" in the search box. Then I have a variety of pictures to look at to help solve the dilemma. Please post to Quiltart when this is finished - I want to see it in its entirety.
