Mexican Quilt in progress

I'm having problems with the tree in the foreground. The roots are driving me crazy. I have come in with paints to make them rounded and extend up into the trunk. However, they look too small, maybe to many. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. You're right - there's something not quite right about the roots. Have you considered taking walk through a park or other area with large trees. You could take your sketch book with you and draw what you see on the bottoms of the trees. I think that might give you the ideas you need to fix the roots.

  2. Hi Marilyn, such detail!!! It is looking great. IMHO, the roots need to be thicker coming off the trunk, more twists and turns to them also. Unless you've seen a tree with straight roots, the ones I've got never go in a straight line!! I'd reduce the number of them, but keep an odd number. A small weed or patch of grass or lichen would also be realistic, or even a cluster of fallen leaves. You're doing very well..........how did you develop the water? Happy stitching

  3. I agree with Janice; the roots look too straight and thin off the trunk. I'd also add some bumps to make them look more organic. I'm not sure you need to reduce the number of them, though you might consider that after you make them thicker.

I also agree that the water and mist look fabulous! Please keep us posted.

  4. Am in agreement with all of the above...it appears that the roots are going downward...they should be going outward..perhaps in and out of the soil...they need to be more twisted and knotted...and various sizes...adding grass and small plants among the twisted roots will anchor your tree.
