Pink Perfection

I've decided on the background, I love this color of blue.  If you remember the original photo from the last post you will see that the blue color is very similar.  I'm trying to decide if I want to crop some off the right side.

This is what it would look like.  I think I've decided but wondered if any of you have a preference?

  1. Crop! It will bring more focus to the flower. Great quilt. Very dimensional.

  2. Crop for sure. This is one where the totality of the flower is the story and extra background is not necessary...IMO

  3. I say don't crop. I think you have more energy in the piece with a focal point off center.

    1. Gerrie, thanks for your comments. I am into symmetrical
design myself. Am giving everyone's comment consideration.

  4. I vote no crop. I like the space.

  5. It works either way. The cropped version works as a camera perfect photo would. Its pretty, the eye is right on the flower and the eye looks no further. The uncropped version does have more energy. An energy that makes the veiwer just a little off. It makes the eye move across the piece looking for something. The empty space would be perfect for subtle unexpected thread play. Or the artist may add just a little something such as a fallen leaf, or petal, to the right lower corner, so that the eye has something to rest on as it moves across. Viewing the orginal photo, there is even a petal and a leaf below the flower on the right, that could be move further right.
Personal opinion: uncropped, no fallen petals, thread work. Eye of the beholder and all that; the off center flower, making the viewer a little off kilter, makes for a more interesting piece. It will also make some viewers ask 'why didn't she cut off that one side'. More people viewing it would probably like it cropped, but that doesn't mean it should be, nor does it mean it shouldn't. What is the artist looking for in leaving the background?

    1. Thanks Barbarba, I had thought that if I left it uncropped I would do thread painting it the fabric. I got lots of comments about adding more on the right. I certainly will rethink this.

  6. Love this piece and especially reading the comments regarding the possibility of cropping! Barbarba Douglas' comments are very well reasoned. I mostly agree with her ideas ... except ... personally I'd go with uncropped PLUS the fallen petal in the lower right corner. (If that's even an option!) Great work, interesting design challenge, and thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks Susan, I have lots to think of on this piece. Lots of people agree with you. It went together for me quickly, not usual for me. I just hope that I can finish it in a timely manner and end up with a good piece.

  7. A quick note would be that as the piece sits, that strong center of the flower, the stem of the flower are lying at approximately the one-third from the left space - a great placement using the "law of thirds". I believe that the piece is more interesting just as you have it set and I would not crop anything off the right side.

    1. Thanks, I love the law of third rule. You can't go wrong with it.
