This year we have been having one or two members give a demo or prepare something that is easy for us to make at our meeting place. This month Judy Rapelje showed us some samples for taking traditional quilting blocks and using them as design elements in an art quilt.
Judy made a lot of samples to show us some techniques she had experimented with using paint. She also showed us an example of a modern bear paw pattern.
This is another sample of a traditional block used in a more modern quilt. Judy is making this for a grand niece.
Judy, made this baby quilt for a soon to be grand niece.
Ann Hanewald's The Dog Who almost Disappeared.
This piece and the one below was made for the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge.
Yoko and John by Ann
Ann's notan piece. She gave the program to us on notans. Ann lives at the beach half the year so she had lots to share with us.
One of the quilts Marge Edie's been making from a friends stash who passed away.
Heidi Woko brought two pieces that she made for out strip challenge. We liked both but thought this one was just outstanding.
Unfortunately the gallery in which we were going to have our exhibit in Sept. has closed and we are looking for another place to display The Strip challenge.
This was Heidi's other piece. She has such a wonderful way with color.
Dianne Gjelsvik also brought her strip piece, can't remember the name but it has to do with strips of wall paper.
Been there done that, want to keep my husband so won't go there again. He does not like hanging wall paper.
Sandra Risvold brought this piece that she was working on the strip challenge as well. It was going to be titled Strip T"s
how creative is that?
However, Sandra wasn't liking this piece so she changed her mind and started working on this. Venus made out of tiny T shapes. How cleaver. Last month Marge Edie showed us how to make bas relief in fabric. Sandra is planning to do Venus in that method.,
I wrote about The Stripper on my last post you know the story behind it.
There have already been strip pieces shown and there are more to come. What a cleaver group we have. Can't wait to see this exhibit hanging.

June Meeting of HiFiber Art Group
Marge Edie hosted the HiFiber meeting yesterday and presented a program, along with Dawn McEntyre on bas relief.
The pears were appliqued with fill behind them to get the bas relief look.. Marge made the leaves separately by sewing two pieces of fabric together, slitting the back piece and turning inside out. She then sewed them down through the center.
Marge then demonstrated using ink pads and a stencil brush to add shadows to the pears.
Dawn and Marge then did an exercise on using three pieces of yarn with a z or s twist. These three pieces were twisted until taunt and them doubled to get the effect seen on the left.
In May our local guild had Ellen Linder for a workshop on double reverse applique and Making an instant abstract quilt. Beatriz Ruez made this tasty looking apple.
This is Beatriz' abstract quilt
This is Penny Little's quilt from the class.
Beatriz must have spent her month in her sewing room as she brought many finished pieces. This is her piece from a prior Notan presentation.
Bea also brought her silk scarves dyed in Bonnie Oullette's class. The one on the right was made by using men's silk ties and transferring the dye to the silk scarf. Bea also brought lots of fabric that she dyed in Bonnie's dyeing class.
These are Penny Little's scarves from the tie dye transfer.

Penny Little did some experiments with Sharpies and alcohol.
Plenty of inspiration until next month.

Feb, Hi-Fiber Meeting
HiFiber met last Thursday for our regular meeting. Marge Edie, Donna Barnhill and Dianne Gjelsvik have been working on a logo for our group.
We thank them for their time spent creating this elegant design.
Penny brought a bag that her sister, Linda made. Linda used one of the feed sacks that Penny brought us last month. We all thought that using the red fabric with the chicken emblem was a cute idea.
I brought several pieces that I've been working on for show & tell. Miss Lena Horn
When this piece is finished it will be in an exhibit at The Clemson Art Center. The exhibit is celebrating Jazz. Clemson is sponsoring a Jazz Festival in May and the exhibit is to be part of the festival.
I also brought a piece I've been working on that is my first attempt at thread-painting a portrait.
I brought it because our program for this month was thread-painting presented by Heidi Wolko. She has been making some amazing pieces using thread-painting as the main element in her quilts.
Heidi, drew Judy Rapelje's name last year for our portrait challenge. Heidi did a wonderful job capturing her.
Here Heidi is showing us the print that she is going to use as a demo. Heidi, recommend quite a few books to us about thread-painting. Some of them were, "Thread Painting Made Easy: by Terry White, "Freestyle Machine Embroidery" by Carol Shinn, and "Thread Magic" by Ellen Anne Eddy.
The June/July 2011 issue of "Quilting Arts" magazine was devoted to making portraits. One of the articles was written by Jennifer Day and it was on thread-painting a portrait. Heidi attributes her success to this article.
This piece by Heidi is totally thread-painted.
This wonderful piece by Heidi, is titled "May Day, May Day, Going, Going, Gone".
A closeup of this piece is below.
Heidi, gave an interesting demo and says that thread-painting is very addictive. I'll agree to that.
