Fast Friday Fabric Challenge

The challenge for FFFC this month is issued by Wendy Wenzel, of Flagstaff, AZ. Her challenge is as follows: "you can use one shape in different sizes, overlap, whatever speaks to you."
I think Wendy was hoping to get a little abstract work out of this group when she issued this challenge.

I for one, tried. I just wonder if it's in me? I love to look at abstract, even took a class from Terry Jerrard-Diamond but it's painful for me to get anything that I think looks right.

I started out this project by choosing a shape. While working at the Arts Center, in Clemson, last week I had time on my hands and started doodling with the idea in mind of coming up with a shape for this project.

Terry taught us to take paper and cut it into shapes and place them on a background until we came up with something pleasing. I cut out a lot of the same shape brought it up to my great room and laid it out on my ottoman. I started out with the first shapes you see in the photos.

The next morning I took them down to my studio and started working again. You can see what happened. I tried to post the photos in order or progression. Realism won out. What can I say.

I have so much to do right now as most of us do. I'm making gifts, have Uncle Dave ready to quilt. Wanted to have him done in time to enter Paducah but don't want to rush it.

Sunday I decided that I must make a decision on what was more important for me to get done. I was going to wait on the FFFC but I couldn't let it go so decided to get at least the top done.

It's important for me to get the gifts done, I want to make stockings for our quilt guild. I have a comfort quilt top ready to quilt for our guild as well but don't know if that will happen. So I decided that Uncle Dave will have to wait. If I get it done by Jan. 1 so be it, some how I don't think that's going to happen.

So yesterday I spent all day making gifts, make that gift, and boy did I have fun. More on that when I finish.

Any comments on what you see would be appreciated.

Cherokee Powwow at Haygood Mill, Picken, SC

One last post about the Haygood Mill in Pickens, SC. This is a photo of Haygood Mill. Every third Saturday they grind grain. I buy corn meal and Whole Wheat flour. The miller doesn't grind a lot of the whole wheat flour because they don't have a way to keep it without refrigeration. I always buy a couple 2 lb. bags and refrigerate them.

This is the recipe on the back of the sack. It is yummy.

Wheat Graham Bread

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
2 tbs. Canola oil
1 teas vanilla

I add: 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 cup nuts
1/2 c Craisens (soaked)

mix dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients, Mix lightly. Put into greased and floured loaf pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 40 to 50 minutes
Yields: 15 to 20 slices.
I used three small loaf pans
ENJOY!

Cherokee Powwow at Haygood Mill, Picken, SC

How much fun is this? The organizer at the mill had the old still going during the third Saturday. Have no idea if there was any brew in the still but the fire was going strong. A fun place to visit.

Cherokee Powwow at Haygood Mill, Picken, SC

HAPPY THANKSGIVING: What better way to celebrate than by sharing it with the people who were here when our forefathers landed.

These are photographs taken during the ceremony. This little girl captured my attention from the beginning. She was so obviously caught up in the drama of this event. I saw her often with an older woman, perhaps her Grandmother, who seemed to be teaching her the old ways.

The young man with the porcupine headdress came from the state of Washington to dance in this ceremony. As with most cultures it is always wonderful to see the young take up old traditions.

The little boy was taking his job teaching children games very seriously. He was obviously having fun doing that job.

I love Indian flute music, I find it very soothing. I could listen to the same song over and over. I think perhaps in a past life I might have been Indian.

Cherokee Powwow at Haygood Mill, Picken, SC

Every third Saturday of the month a special program is held at the Haygood Mill in Pickens, SC. This month a powwow of the local branch of the Cherokee Nation was held. These programs are always open to the public.

I love to go there even when there is not a program. There is always so much eye candy. This week I am going to post, hopefully, every day a different part of these events.

Today will feature all the wonderful crafts, from fry bread making to painted horses. I know there is a double post at the beginning, however, I deleted it and it is still there. Bear with me.
